A Paradigm for Cultural Engagement
A short essay submitted into Archbishop Foley Beach's essay contest.
Just one month ago I set out to publish a weekly newsletter and here I’ve already missed a week! Since I’m wrapping up a nice vacation week with my family and don’t have time to whip something up worth reading, I figure it is as good a time as any to share a short essay I submitted to an annual contest called by the Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America.
The Most Rev. Dr. Foley Beach gave essayists the following prompt:
Submit an essay telling how the church can effectively deal with controversial social issues of the day, while being true to the gospel and remaining loving to the people.
You might quibble with the prompt itself, which seems to suggest that effective cultural engagement could somehow not be true to the gospel and loving to people. Well, at least that’s how I felt upon first reading. Nevertheless, I submitted an essay and have made it available here.
As always, I welcome engagement from my readers.
Until next time,
Lance
